Opening Day
So I am a huge sports fan (if you couldn’t tell from reading my posts) and well there is an American holiday called Opening Day that happens in Major League Baseball at the beginning of April.
I had the day off on Monday (to spend with a good friend of mine who was in town) and it just so happened fell on Opening Day 2009 for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Perfect!
Traffic heading downtown for the 12:40 start was fairly heavy. And outside the stadium it was busy with people wearing their Sedona red (good to see Dbacks fans supporting the home team for once).
Everyone got a free shirt (of which you could even visit a section in the ballpark and exchange for a different size). It does amaze me that they think everyone is going to be an adult XL or kids L who walks through the gate.
So shirt size aside, the roof was open and it was a gorgeous day.
After Amazing Grace and National Anthem there was a flyover.
Ugh, the roof was then closed. Apparently since it was a full house they couldn’t offer fans in the sunny seats a shady seat option so roof gets shut. (Spoiled people – who doesn’t want a little sun, baseball, beverage and hot dog.)
The game itself didn’t dissapoint with 8 home runs. (Not a record – that stands at 12 homers.)
Felipe Lopez, who is replacing Orlando Hudson at second, Played good defense and hit the ball very well. Two homers, one from either side of the plate, which had never been done before on opening day. Tony Clark also acheived the same feat.
And on top of that the Diamondbacks WON!
All in all my friend enjoyed our indoor stadium, the fans were great (hope it will last through the season) and outside of a shaky performance from ace Brandon Webb play was good, the team has promise.
But when you are 1-0 you still have a long way to go to the World Series. Here is to hoping
