Football playoff brackets set

November 10th, 2009

By: Brad Cesmat

It’s hard for me to go through the brackets without saying that the top seeds throughout 4A and 5A are going to meet up in the finals. While I am sure you are excited about your school, unless your name is Hamilton, Chandler, Brophy,  Centennial,  Chaparral or Mingus you are going to need a lot of luck and breaks to win a title.

Some teams that have caught my eye in recent weeks that could make a big postseason run…

4A-Saguaro may be young, but those kids are coming together at the right time…Cactus Shadows sitting there as a #2 seed semifinal…..

In 4A2-loce the matchup of Liberty vs Coronado…both those teams can make a long run, the Dons don’t get much love and Liberty has rolled through the competition.

Can anyone stop Arcadias offense? They may need triple digits for the scoreboard when Arcadia and Cactus meet in a likely second round matchup.

5A2-Chap vs Centennial…its what most high school fans want to see….Marcos De Niza has a ton of talent, but in Friday nights loss to Mtn Pointe, lots of mental mistakes that teams like Chap and Centennial wont let slide.

5A-This isn’t the best Hamilton team I’ve seen…this is the best Chandler team….Brophy is a year away….look out for St. Marys  they wont be a easy out for Basha Friday night.

MTN View is peaking at the right time, Red Mountain isn’t….

Gotten a lot of questions about Mtn. Pointe….great skill talent, well coached, are they big enough to slug it out with Chandler or Hamilton?

Get out to a game this Friday night…..

In the Zone: Week 4

October 4th, 2009

I got back into the swing of things this week as I got to go out and film again.  This week I went out to two games.  The first was Glendale at Sunnyslope and the second was Horizon at Central.  Both games were really good, although the scores were kind of lopsided.

Sunnyslope entered this game with an 0-3 record looking to get their first win of the season at home and right from the get go, they did just that.  Sunnyslope ran for a 94 yard touchdown, scored a safty and passed for a 25 yard touchdown.  But wait, that was only in the first quarter.  They continued to dominate on both sides of the ball for the rest of that game and ended up taking their first win of the season with a score of 32-16.

I had to leave Sunnyslope at halftime so I would have enough time to make it over to Central High School to make the Horizon vs Central game.  At that point, Sunnyslope was up 23-8.

I got to Central High School and the music was bumping as Power 98.3 played host that night.  It was the end of the first half and was all Horizon.  They had the lead 28-7.  Central, however, put together a nice drive to go into the locker room with some good momentum and narrowed the lead to 14.  The second half started out slow as both teams went out with a few three and outs and left the 3rd quarter scoreless.  Horizon ended up scoring a touchdown in the forth quarter and won with a final score of 36-14.  This left the Horizon Huskies at 4-0 with more wins this year than the last two years combined.

From Central High School, I rushed back to the studio to edit my highlights.  Since I had gone to two games, I got back to the studio a lot later than usual.  I hurried to get my highlights ingested and edited and got them done just on time with about 30 seconds left until air time.  When it comes to television, it is not about how many minutes you have.  It comes down to the seconds.

That night was a real exciting night for me because I got my first on air time with my interview that I had with Mary Jo Kolze from McClintock High School.  I hope you all enjoyed it!  I just want to take a moment to thank Mary Jo again for sitting down with me.

As the show aired, I also answered the phones to get scores that you all, the viewers, called in to place them on the show.  Don’t forget, you can call in your high school scores and we will put them on the air.  You all calling in helps put together our show tremendously.  Again, the number is (602) 207-3479.

In The Zone: Week 3

September 23rd, 2009

This week I didn’t go to a game, however, I started doing features which I am going to be doing every week on Mondays.  I still will be at a game every Friday night though.  I wouldn’t miss out on that for anything!

This week I went to McClintock High School to sit down with senior volleyball captain Mary Jo Kozle.  She is arguably one of the best setters in the state this year and is being recruited by some division one schools.  She’s a real cool girl and you all will get to know her when the interview is aired this coming Friday night, 9/25.

Not only did I have the privilege of sitting down with Mary Jo, but it was an excellent match up as well.  The McClintock Chargers played host to the Buckeye Hawks.  McClintock was looking to stay undefeated while Buckeye was looking for a win to bring their ranking up in the State.  After getting in a hole early, McClintock ended up sneaking by to take the match, 3-2.  It was a great set of games that I really enjoyed.

No one knows where I will be next week, but I may just show up at your school with a chance for you to enter the Varsity Zone.

In The Zone: Week 2

September 23rd, 2009

My second week in the Varsity Zone was definitely an interesting one.  I headed out to a school, which I am not going to name, and when I got there I ran into a little bit of a problem.  I went to the ticket table and they wouldn’t let me in.  It was about 6:15 PM and with all the games in the valley starting at 7 PM, I didn’t know what to do.  I called John Roller, the producer of the Varsity Zone, and asked him if there was any other school in the area I could possibly go to.  He said he would call me back and I waited.

The time on the clock ticked and at about 6:30 PM my phone rang.  John said that there was a game close by at Central High School.  I stepped on the gas and hauled it over there so I wouldn’t miss the kickoff.

I pulled up with about 15 minutes until game time and walked up to the ticket table.  After people walkie-talkied back and forth for about five minutes they let me in.  I got onto the field just in time to get shots of both teams entering the field.

The Central Bobcats hosted the Alhambra Lions in this tough match up.  Like the week before I approached the referees before the kickoff to introduce myself and tell them I was here to film the game.

One of them was a real nice guy who just moved here from Texas and used to be in the TV business.  He gave me some insight and great advice.

From the kickoff, this game seemed to be all Alhambra.  They played great defense and everything seemed to be going their way.  After the first quarter they were up 8-0.  From that moment forward, however, Central’s offense started to click and they were completing ridiculous pass plays.  It was real exciting as they scored 15 unanswered points.

One of the most interesting things I saw that night was one of their football players was also in the band.  He played the bass drum during the halftime show.  It really takes a lot to be able to juggle school, football and the band, so I give that kid props for being able to handle all that.

Central ended up taking that game 21-15.

I rushed back to the studio and ingested my footage and edited my highlights.  I helped out with shot sheets again and luckily we got them all done in time without having to sprint to the studio again.

During the show, however, I manned the phones to write down all the scores people called in.  As they were called in, I enter the scores into the graphics that ended up going on later in the show.  Please don’t hesitate and call in your scores every week.  It is a chance for you to do a huge part and gives you an opportunity to enter the Varsity Zone.  All you have to do is call (602) 207-3479.

In The Zone: Week 1

September 19th, 2009

Hi everyone!

My name is Jason Lewis and I am an intern for the Varsity Zone.  I am currently a junior at Arizona State University and am studying broadcast journalism.  Every week I am going to post what I did and my experiences here for all of you to be able to get a feel and see what goes on behind the scenes of the Varsity Zone.

My first week here in Varsity Zone was an intense one.  It happened to be the second week of the show and I was thrown right in and sent out to film a game.  I was sent to Scottsdale where the Yuma Criminals faced off against the hometown Horizon Huskies.

From the moment I got there, I could feel the intensity.  Students decked out in green and yellow filled the parking lot all pumped to kickoff the football season.  Next thing I knew, a pickup truck pulls into the parking lot.  It wasn’t just any pickup truck but one with the bed converted into a pool.  Seniors jumped in and students surrounded the truck for the kickoff tailgate.  I’ve never seen anything like that before and was excited to see what else was there to come.

I entered the high school stadium and started talking to a player’s parent who was taking pictures on the sidelines.  He was real nice and gave me all the information I needed to know about Arizona high school football.  Not only was this my first game filming, but it was also my first Arizona high school football game in general.  I am from New Jersey and football is a lot different out here then back home.

A big inflatable Husky sat in the back of the end zone ready for the players to enter the field.  Music started to play and a man with a Husky led the team out onto the field.  It was real cool how Horizon has an actual Husky as their mascot to bring them out onto the field.

From that moment forward, the action began.  The captains met in the center of the field for the coin toss.  Before I knew it the ball was in the air for the kickoff.  I worked up a good sweat that game running up and down the sidelines trying to keep up with all the action.  There were a bunch of beautiful pass plays from the Huskies and I was real impressed with how well their offense looked.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t stay for the whole game because I had to get back to the studio to get my footage in and edited before the beginning of the show.  When I left, Horizon just scored to make it 28-0.  Horizon ended up winning that game 49-20.

I rushed back to the studio and ingested all my footage.  Ingesting footage is how we get the video off the tape and into the system where it can be accessed from any computer in the building with News Browse.  New Browse is the software we use to edit.  I edited my highlights with a few of those pass plays and touchdowns.

As all the other videographers got back to the studio, I jumped into the editing booths to fill out their shot sheets as they edited.  A shot sheet is where we write down the play and players names that are used in the highlights.  When I finished writing the last plays, I sprinted to the studio, as the show was seconds from starting, to hand Tim Ring the shot sheets.

I then watched as the work and effort I put in was all placed together as one final show.  It felt really good to see the footage I filmed and edited put up on live TV.  It was a rush and intense seconds from the show starting, but a lot of fun.  It was only the first week and with a long season to go, I was excited to come back next week and see what was in store for me in the Varsity Zone.

Varsity Zone vs. Jay Leno

September 15th, 2009

Greetings all,

My name is John Roller and I’m the producer of the Varsity Zone program that airs Friday night’s on Channel 3. I want to take a little time on this Tuesday morning to thank everyone for their kind words and efforts for the start-up of this new TV show. Unlike the new Jay Leno show, which made its debut last night, we had to start from the ground up. No tride and true format to fall back on. No studio full of people to make sure things go perfectly. The Varsity Zone staff are a small group of people with a passion for high school sports. We want to bring those highlights and special athletes to you every week. Behind the scenes this small group works to find unique stories that go beyond just a Friday night football score show. But, we need help from you the audience! If you have a Student Athlete that you would like to have featured on the Varsity Zone send us a picture and information.
If mom or dad were athletes in their own right we want to feature them in the “Then & Now” portion of the show. Essentially this is a show that is a work in progress because we are going to rely on you. You the audience can shape this show. We want to hear from you. Please send your comments and suggestions to us on www.azfamily.com/varsityzone.
Now I have to get back to checking out the hot games this week. Don’t forget a majority of the games this week will be played on Thursday. For me personally I plan to take in the Mesa VS. Chandler game as well as the Chaparral VS. Mesquite game in Gilbert.
Friday of course I will be at the Varsity Zone getting ready for 10:00PM. Thanks for watching.

Nat’s Notes – Girl’s Volleyball

September 12th, 2009

In Mesa the Westwood Tournament, dubbed the toughest in the state, pool play got underway today with single elimination beginning Saturday afternoon.

Tteams to watch this weekend are number one seed Xavier who comes in undefeated so far this season. Number one seed Sunnyslope who is the best of 4A-1 looking to prove it can be Arizona’s best. Desert Vista is a team to watch out for especially if they make it into the title match against Xavier.

To see a list of the pool assignment, http://www2.mpsaz.org/westwood/athletics/v-ball/pools/

National eyes will be on Chandler as Nike teams up with Chandler High for the first Nike Tournament of Champions. Play got underway yesterday and runs through September 19. The field of 36 teams is from Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon and Utah. Arizona’s best chance to win is 5-A Desert Vista. The team in the field to beat is Pleasant Grove of Utah. Several college coaches will be in attendance giving good local players a chance to shine.

Phoenix Horizon is one of the teams playing in both tournaments.

These two big tourneys are just the beginning of a busy tournament season for the ladies.
